WHAT IS GPS?
INTRODUCTION:
GPS stands for global positioning satellite. official name of GPS is NAVSTAR GPS. it is a satellite based navigational system. it is made up of two dozen satellites working in unisons known as "satellite constellation".
this constellation is currently controlled by United states AIR FORCE. it costs about $750 million to manage and maintain the system every year.
GPS is mainly used for surveying, map making, navigation.
HISTORY:
In past, navigation was done by means of landmarks like mountains, trees, or leaving trails of stone. For traveling across the ocean a process called "Dead Reckoning" was used. The measurement tool was crude and inaccurate. Also by means of Landmarks like mountains trees etc. Similarly navigation was also done through pole stars. but now GPS technology has replaced all these old methods.
WORKING:
satellites send coded signals indicating their positions in space and the exact time the signals are being sent. Information from multiple satellites is gathered and the position is determined through TRILATERATION.
CONCLUSION:
The technology is getting advanced day by day bringing huge changes in society. the applications are constantly growing. the cost of the receivers is dropping while at the same time the accuracy of system is improving.
